Description: The African Elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) is a fascinating and majestic animal of the African savannah. It is the largest land mammal in the world and mainly feeds on plant matter. African elephants are divided into two subspecies, the Savannah Elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) and the Forest Elephant (Loxodonta africana cyclotis). The majestic elephant in this image carefully observes its surroundings while wandering through the bush. The ivory trade has greatly reduced the elephant population, but since the international ban in 1989, the main threat to these animals is the loss of their habitat due to the expansion of agricultural land.
