Red Mangrove vegetation at Qara-ni-Qio River

Description: Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle L.) is one of the dominant plant species along the Qara-ni-Qio River in Fiji. These trees and shrubs, reaching up to 30 meters in height, have perfectly adapted to the salty coasts and brackish river mouths. They serve as vital nurseries for a variety of reef fish and invertebrates, providing ideal hiding spots in the murky waters of the mangroves. The habitat they offer is crucial for the ecosystem and biodiversity of the seas. Unfortunately, 50 percent of the world's mangrove forests have already been destroyed, putting many species at risk.
